Wolf Hood and Downdraft Problems

Fourteen ventilation faults, from a hood that runs without clearing the steam to a downdraft that will not rise. Wolf’s own ventilation guide is plain that a hood is only as good as the duct behind it, and that is where most of these pages end up.

What Wolf asks of the duct

The ventilation guide calls for rigid metal ducting only, never flexible. It says a hood works most efficiently when the run stays under 50 feet of equivalent length, 40 for a downdraft, with no elbows back to back and ideally 15 inches of straight duct between them. Pro hoods belong 30 to 36 inches above the counter; mounted higher, capture suffers. Every Wolf hood except the low-profile wall hood ships with a backdraft damper at the transition, while downdrafts have none, and in cold weather the guide allows that an extra damper may be needed. It also notes that make-up air may be required to replace what the blower removes.

Why that matters up the hill
