Hood Controls Do Nothing

Short answer

A Wolf hood that gives no light and no fan from any control has usually lost its supply: a tripped breaker, a GFCI that cut out, or a connection disturbed during other work. Wolf asks for a separate grounded supply to every hood and does not recommend a GFCI on indoor ones. Nothing at all, or only the fan

Wolf pro hoods keep their controls on recessed knobs under the front edge: lights on the left, blower on the right and, on 27-inch-deep wall hoods, heat lamps between them. When none of them responds, the likeliest cause sits upstream of all three: no power reaching the hood. If the lights work and only the fan is dead, the fault moves to the blower side, and so do our questions.

Where the installation comes in

A hood is wired once, during the build, and then forgotten until something changes. A remodel in an older Olde Town house that moved a switch, shared the run with new lighting, or put the hood behind a GFCI meant for the counter outlets can leave it on a supply Wolf never intended.

What the visit covers

We confirm power arrives at the hood, then test each control in turn. A supply fault is work for an electrician, and we tell you so and why.

Before you book

Find the hood's breaker. If it has tripped, push it fully to off and then on, once. Wolf's troubleshooting for a hood that will not run begins with that same check.

Look for a GFCI outlet or breaker that could be feeding the hood and press its reset. If it trips again, leave it off and tell us; Wolf advises against a GFCI on an indoor hood.

If the knobs stopped answering after a heavy clean, let them dry out completely before trying again. Wolf's care notes say never to spray cleaner straight onto the control knobs.

Questions

The hood stopped during a power cut and never came back. Same fault?

Quite possibly. A breaker can trip as the power returns, and a GFCI may need its reset pressed, so check both first. If power plainly reaches the hood and still nothing responds, the controls are next. Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, tests them with a meter rather than swapping parts to find out.

Can we keep cooking while the hood is out of action?

Yes. Wolf's ventilation guide says its cooking products do not need ventilation when installed to its instructions; the hood is there for performance. Its hood guide does ask for the hood to be on for high-heat cooking and flambéing, so save hard searing and anything set alight until the hood works again.
