North Bend averages about 59 inches of precipitation a year and nearly 15 inches of snowfall, and Mount Si rises to 4,167 feet over a town that itself sits at roughly 440 feet. It is fair to ask whether a mountain setting changes how a gas range behaves. Here it does not. Wolf’s dual fuel installation guide rates its natural gas ranges to 10,250 feet and its LP ranges to 8,600 feet without adjustment, and the ventilation guide only starts to discount hood performance above 5,000 feet. What does reach a North Bend kitchen is winter: cold air at the far end of the duct, damp air in the room, and now and then a storm that takes the power with it.

Cold duct, damp room

A hood duct that ends at an outside wall or roof cap has winter waiting at the far end. If a chill drifts down from the hood while it is switched off, the backdraft flap meant to keep that air out is the first thing we check. Wolf’s guide allows that a cold-climate installation may need a second one; whether this run does is for an HVAC contractor to decide.

Indoors, a humidifier running through the winter can turn gas flames orange or yellow. Wolf names excess room humidity as a cause and says it is especially common in the winter months, when humidifiers are in use. That colour comes from the air, not from a failing burner.

The oven after a power cut

On a Wolf gas range, an oven left on through a brief outage should relight on its own: Wolf says the igniter senses the gas flow and lights the burner once power returns, and if it does not, turning the knob off and back on should do it. Wolf’s advice is to switch the oven off whenever the power goes, however short the cut, because a gas oven cannot be lit by hand and there is no safe way to run one without electricity. On a dual fuel range the oven is electric and goes off with the power; a control that behaves oddly once the lights are back is worth a call.
