An unincorporated, exurban corner of King County on I-90, at the northeast edge of Tiger Mountain State Forest, that began as a mill town and took its name from a railway official.

A mill town on the interstate

Preston has no city hall. It is an unincorporated community that grew up around a mill, was named for the railway man William T. Preston, and still gathers at a clubhouse the Works Projects Administration put up in 1939. The Raging River runs past on its way down to Fall City, where it joins the Snoqualmie. Two questions shape a Wolf repair out here: where the gas comes from, and what the range does without power.

Propane or mains gas: the plate decides

Where a home runs on propane (LP), the first thing we read is the rating plate rather than the burner. Wolf builds its ranges for either natural gas or LP, and the plate states which one this range was set up for; if that disagrees with what the house is supplied with, Wolf’s dual fuel installation guide sends you to the gas supplier before anything else. The pressure regulator is built into the range, so Wolf’s flame checklist also asks you to confirm that nobody has added an extra regulator at the appliance itself.

Some LP behaviour is normal and needs no visit. A little orange at the flame tips is expected on propane, and so is a tall flame the first time a burner is lit each day, which Wolf puts down to a build-up of gas and the way LP behaves. A flame that lifts off the burner, or every burner turning weak at once, is another matter. Wolf counts a poor supply and a damaged regulator among the causes; we read the range’s side of that, and the tank and its line stay with your propane supplier.

When the power is off

Wolf’s igniters are electric and will not click without power. Its outage guidance allows the surface burners on its gas and dual fuel ranges, sealed burner rangetops and cooktops to be lit by hand with a lighter at least six inches long, the rangetop wok burner excepted, and rules out the oven, the griddle, the French top and the charbroiler. Nothing relights itself while the power is off, so a burner lit that way needs watching, and Wolf is plain that the burners are not there to heat the kitchen.

Once power is back, a burner that clicks without catching gets Wolf’s first step: the breaker to the range off for 30 seconds, then on again. If that changes nothing, ring Summit Cooking Appliance Service at (425) 272-6613 and read us the model and serial from the plate, so we know which ignition parts apply before the visit.

  • Set to 375 and a thermometer on the middle rack read closer to 320. The sensor had drifted. He swapped it, recalibrated, then ran an empty bake to prove the reading held.

  • Second-hand house, second-hand range, and nobody had ever serviced it. The hinges had sagged so the door sat proud at the top. New hinge set and a gasket, and it shuts like it should.

  • Radiant element ran flat out or not at all. The infinite switch had welded itself closed. Straightforward once he had tested it, though I waited eight days for the switch to land.
