Downdraft Rises Then Drops Back

Short answer

A Wolf downdraft that rises and then sinks again, or stalls part-way, has a fault somewhere in its lift: the micro-switches, the gear motor and crank, or the control that runs them. A lift that loses its place

Wolf’s downdraft parts manual lists an actuator, a spring, sliding guides and a pair of micro-switches, alongside the main board and the cables out to the remote module; its troubleshooting adds the gear motor and crank assembly. A switch that fails or drifts, a worn crank or guide, or a control losing the module’s signal can each leave the chimney somewhere it should not be.

Where the installation comes in

The chimney retracts into the cabinet under the cooktop. In an Issaquah kitchen refitted around an existing downdraft, new drawer boxes, a moved sink trap or a pull-out bin can end up pressing on the housing, so the lift fights it on every trip. We look there first: it is the simplest thing to put right, and the one a new part will never cure.

Before you book

Note exactly what it does: all the way up then straight back down, up and down with no button pressed, or stopping part-way. Each pattern points somewhere different and shortens the diagnosis.

Make sure nothing touches the chimney as it climbs, including a pan handle over the back of the cooktop, and that the filters and their covers sit fully in place.

If the cabinet below opens without tools, look in without reaching inside for a drawer, a pipe or anything stored hard against the downdraft housing.

Questions

Is the chimney supposed to lower itself when the blower switches off?

No. Wolf's guide says that after DELAY the blower runs on, then shuts off with the chimney still up; lowering it takes a separate press of UP/DOWN.
