Downdraft Will Not Rise

Short answer

A Wolf downdraft that stays down when you press UP/DOWN has lost power, lost the signal from its control, or met something mechanical. Wolf names the chimney's alignment, the gear motor, the crank assembly, the control and its communication cable, and the supply. Do not lever the chimney up by hand. What should happen

Press UP/DOWN and a Wolf downdraft’s chimney rises out of the counter behind the cooktop, the blower starting at the last speed used, or at MED the first time. The lift is motor-driven: Wolf’s parts manual lists an actuator and a pair of micro-switches, and its troubleshooting names the gear motor and crank assembly. If nothing moves at all, the first question is whether the command is getting through.

Where the installation comes in

A downdraft sits half in the counter and half in the cabinet below, and Wolf lists improper installation and a chimney out of alignment ahead of any part. On an island cooktop in a Squak Mountain or Montreux kitchen, a cutout slightly out of square, the wrong trim, or a cabinet built tight around the housing can each leave the chimney binding. Wolf also suggests reseating the communication cable from the module, but that means reaching behind panels, so we treat it as part of the repair.

What the visit covers

We prove the supply and the control first, then open the cabinet, free the chimney without forcing it, and test the gear motor and crank.

Before you book

Switch the downdraft's breaker off for 10 seconds, then back on, and press UP/DOWN once more. That reset is on Wolf's own list for this fault.

Clear the lid and the space above it: anything resting across the top, from a chopping board to a pan handle reaching back from a burner, has to go before you try again.

Check that the filters and their covers are seated properly. Wolf's guide says the downdraft is not to be run without its filters.

Questions

Can I pull the chimney up by hand so I can cook tonight?

Please do not. Wolf is plain that a downdraft should never be forced up into position, and a stuck one has to be taken apart to repair.
