Short answer

A Wolf radiant element that stays at full brightness whatever the setting has stopped getting its off-spells between pulses, which points at the control that switches it rather than at the element. Pulsing versus stuck

Wolf’s electric tops do not run an element at part power. The control switches it between zero and full, over and over: a low setting means long spells at zero, a high one means long spells at full. So on Simmer an element spends most of its time at zero and looks nothing like it does on Hi. One that glows as hard on Melt as on Hi, never pausing, has stopped being cycled, so whatever level the panel shows has lost its grip on the element.

Rule out the outer rings first. On a dual-zone, triple-zone or oval element, an outer zone runs at the centre’s level once it is added, and its symbol lights on the panel. A bigger glowing area is not a hotter setting.

Where the installation comes in

Wiring does not hold an element on; the switching in the control does. Still, a top lifted out and reconnected during a remodel is reconnected to rules Wolf spells out: a circuit serving only the cooktop, a separate ground wire rather than the neutral, and approved connectors where house wiring is aluminium. While the top is out for this fault, we read that connection as well, since it is rarely this easy to see.

Before you book

Set the element to its lowest setting and watch it for a minute beside another element at the same level. A working one looks clearly dimmer than on high; the faulty one stays just as bright.

Look at the symbols by that control. If Zone 2, Zone 3 or Oval is lit, the outer ring was added, and a touch on the same pad drops it again.

If the element keeps glowing after On/Off and All Off, switch the cooktop off at its breaker and leave it off until the visit.
