Clicking That Started After You Cleaned the Top

Short answer

Ticking that began straight after a clean points first at water: in a burner base, round an electrode, or run down behind a knob into its switch. Let the top dry, reseat each cap flat and make sure every knob springs back when pressed. If the ticking survives a dry top, Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, tests the switches and the spark module.

Summit Cooking Appliance Service

One visit reads the appliance and the installation around it. The $89 call-out pays for that reading and is deducted once you sign off the repair. Visits run 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days; phones picked up 24/7.

How water gets to the spark

You gave the top a proper clean: grates off, caps lifted, a wet cloth round the burners and across the knobs. Now one or more burners tick in bursts, or keep ticking with nothing lit. Water is the common thread. It pools in a burner base, beads on an electrode, or runs down the front panel into the switches behind the knobs, where a wet contact can pass for a knob turned to light.

Where the range sits plays a part. When the sink is only a short run of counter away, rinse water and drips from a wrung-out cloth land on the nearest burners and knobs every day, and a deep clean adds more on top. Those are the burners to dry first.

Giving it time, and when time stops helping

Water on a cap dries fast. Water that has run in behind the control panel takes longer, so the ticking may fade in stages rather than stop at once.

If the top is plainly dry, every knob springs back and the ticking carries on, drying is no longer the answer. Something behind the panel, a switch or the spark module, needs testing, and that is our side of the line. Tell us which burners tick and whether the ticking stops when the range is off at the breaker.

Before you book

  1. Keep every burner off while the top dries. Wolf's use and care guides allow a hair dryer to help; keep it on a low setting and play it over the burners that got wet.
  2. Press each knob in and let go. Wolf says it should spring back into place; one that stays pushed in keeps the ticking going, and freeing it is the whole fix.
  3. Lift each cap and set it down again centred and flat, and take out any foil laid under the grates. On an older Wolf whose caps screw onto the head, make sure each is snug.
  4. Stop there. Whatever sits behind the appliance's own panels, on its gas valves or live inside it is ours to test: call Summit Cooking Appliance Service on (425) 272-6613 and say what you found in the steps above.

Questions

How long should a wet Wolf burner take to dry out?

Wolf gives no fixed time; its guides simply say to let the area dry completely and allow a hair dryer to help. Water on a cap goes quickly, water inside a knob switch takes longer. If the top is dry and the knobs return properly but the ticking continues, Summit Cooking Appliance Service, (425) 272-6613, can test the switches and the spark module.
