Range Knobs Too Hot to Hold

Short answer

Knobs you cannot turn bare-handed mean heat is reaching the control panel by a route it should not take: past an oven door that no longer closes square, through a blocked air gap above the door, or up from burners the hood is not capturing. Heat from below: the oven

The lower route runs past the door. Wolf’s use and care guides describe a cool-air intake just above the oven door and an exhaust vent underneath it. When the door hangs slightly out of line, or its gasket stops meeting the frame along the top, oven heat escapes up the face of the range and across the control panel.

A dual-fuel range has an electric oven, and Wolf says its electric ovens use cooling fans to stop parts overheating; one that has quit is worth ruling out.

Heat from above: the burners and the hood

Wolf cautions that large-diameter pans can make neighbouring surfaces very hot, and a stockpot overhanging a front burner sends that heat down onto the knobs. Then there is the hood. In a compact Olde Town kitchen, or anywhere a hood was hung high to keep a sightline open, it may miss Wolf’s height band or the range’s full width, and the plume curls forward instead of rising.

Before you book

With the oven cold and the door shut, sight along its top edge from one side for an uneven gap. Leave the gasket alone: Wolf says rubbing or moving it can spoil the seal.

Make sure nothing is pressed against the narrow slot just above the oven door or the vent below it. Wolf's use and care guides want both kept clear at all times.

Cook once with the hood on a higher speed and pans sized to their burners, and see whether the knobs stay cooler; that tells us where to start.

How hot is too hot for the knobs on a Wolf range?

Wolf's use and care guides give no knob temperature, so there is no figure to hold yours against. A practical line: if ordinary cooking has you reaching for a cloth to turn a knob, heat is escaping from somewhere it should be contained, and finding where is worth a visit.

Can I keep using the range until the visit?
